Detroit Zoo celebrates its first lion born in 40 years

Detroit Zoo to reopen June 8 for members, with new procedures in place
ROYAL OAK, Mich. โ The Detroit Zoo is set to reopen Monday, June 8 after being closed since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Members of the zoo will have an exclusive opportunity to visit during a special four-day reopening period. Also, prior to entering you will be required to show your ID, membership card and digital or printed timed ticket at the zooโs admission booth. The zoo says it has implemented enhanced cleaning procedures, including in restrooms where attendants will be monitoring capacity limits. Also, the camera is livestreaming 22 hours a day, so you can spend some time seeing what Kalee, Sparky, Whisker and Lucius are up to.
Detroit Zoo debuts new polar bear, Anana, to help with breeding efforts
ROYAL OAK, Mich. โ The Detroit Zoo is debuting a new polar bear, Anana, to help the threatened species with its breeding efforts. Anana made her debut Thursday, on International Polar Bear Day. March marks the start of polar bear breeding season, which is already apparent for 15-year-old male Nuka and 7-year-old female Suka, who have been at the Detroit Zoo since 2011 and 2018, respectively. Anana is 19 years old and was previously at the Cincinnati Zoo to breed with another male polar bear. When that polar bear didnโt appear to be fertile, Anana was brought to the Detroit Zoo to breed with Nuka.
New polar bear to debut at Detroit Zoo today
DETROIT โ In honor of International Polar Bear Day, the Detroit Zoo is debuting their newest polar bear family member. The polar bear, 19-year-old Anana, came to the zoo from the Cincinnati Zoo in late January. Visitors can join the DZS in celebrating Nuka, Suka and newcomer Anana at the Detroit Zoo during International Polar Bear Day on Thursday, February 27. Animal care staff will share information about the personalities and behaviors of polar bears Nuka, Suka and Anana immediately following each feeding. Children will also have the opportunity to compare themselves to a life-size polar bear cut-out in the Nunavut Gallery.
Bald eagles survives train collision, finds healing at Detroit Zoo
DETROIT โ A bald eagle who was injured after a train collision last fall is now thriving at the Detroit Zoo. In Oct. 2019, the bald eagle was discovered injured in a Wendyโs parking lot in Monroe, Michigan, after a citizen reported witnessing a train and bald eagle collide a week prior, according to the zoo. The bird, named Captain Marvel, joins two other rescued bald eagles at the zoo; Flash and Mr. America. โWeโre happy that weโre able to offer her a home here at the Detroit Zoo,โ said Scott Carter, chief life sciences officer for the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS). โFemale bald eagles tend to display more assertive behaviors, so she could end up being in charge in the eaglesโ habitat,โ said Carter.

Detroit Zoo welcomes new female gray wolf Renner
ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Cotton Family Wolf Wilderness at the Detroit Zoo has a new family member: Renner, a 3-year-old female gray wolf from the Wildlife Science Center in Stacy, Minnesota. Renner will serve as a companion for 9-year-old male gray wolf Kaskaphatew, also known as Kaska, who has lived at the Detroit Zoo since 2015. Family is a critical part of the fabric of wolf society and is important to their well-being." Gray wolf breeding season occurs late in the winter season, female wolves typically give birth to four to six pups after a two-month gestation, according to the Detroit Zoo. The Detroit Zoological Society will launch National Wolf Awareness Week with a celebration at the Cotton Family Wolf Wilderness on Oct. 20.
Tiger brothers debut in new habitat at Detroit Zoo
Detroit Zoo has introduced the new Devereaux Tiger Forest and welcomed Amur tigers Nikolai and Aleksei, 2-year-old brothers who were born at the Columbus Zoo. The habitat is also home to 16-year-old female Kisa, who was born at the Detroit Zoo. The renovated and expanded habitat was made possible in part by a $1-million gift from the Richard C. Devereaux Foundation. The $3.5-million habitat occupies 1 acre in the Detroit Zoo's Asian Forest across from the Holtzman Wildlife Foundation Red Panda Forest. The Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica), formerly known as the Siberian tiger, is the largest member of the big cat family and the largest of the five remaining subspecies of tiger.
