For those unfamiliar with โJeopardy!,โ Trebek presented himself as scholarly, serious, reserved -- all business, but he was really a down-to-earth person who had a bit of a wacky sense of humor. There were a few unexpected events over the years on โJeopardy!โ -- even a handful of wedding proposals. Even at age 80 and in stage 4 pancreatic cancer, Trebek brought optimism to the show ever day.

Here is how Trebekโs love of sports gave him a special connection to Detroit. Hockey is what made the Detroit connection with Trebek. Growing up he idolized the championship Red Wings of the 1950s and in particular hockey legend Gordie Howe. While Trebek had many fans in this country, he was a national hero in Canada especially among hockey fans.
Foes of new Detroit-Canada bridge lose key court decision
DETROIT The Michigan appeals court ruled in favor of the state Thursday in a challenge to a second bridge being built between Detroit and Canada. Companies controlled by the Moroun family, owners of the Ambassador Bridge, sued over the condemnation of land to make room for the Gordie Howe International Bridge. Canada assumed financial responsibility for the project, and any money spent by Michigan is reimbursed by Canada, the appeals court said. While some Michigan funds might be used momentarily, no Michigan funds are ultimately expended under the crossing agreement.The Legislature requires the Transportation Department to keep it informed with various reports, the court said. The bridge, named for a native of Canada who played hockey for the Detroit Red Wings, is expected to open in 2024.
It has been 3 years since Gordie Howe left us
DETROIT Gordie Howe died June 10, 2016 at age 88. It's a little unsettling to think it's been three years already without the hockey icon. 1989: Wayne Gretzky becomes the all-time leading points scorer in the NHL, passing Gordie Howe's 1,850 career points with goal to tie a game between his current team, the Los Angeles Kings, and his former team, the Edmonton Oilers, at 4-4. He would score again in overtime to give the Kings the win. By the time he retired in 1999, Gretzky had collected a total of 2,857 points in his career. Hide Caption
