GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. – A prosecutor declined to file charges Tuesday against a suburban Detroit man who displayed a Ku Klux Klan flag in his window next to the home of a Black family, saying the “horrible conduct” doesn't violate Michigan law. An ethnic intimidation charge would require physical contact, property damage or threats of such activity, said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. JeDonna Dinges, 57, of Grosse Pointe Park, said the klan flag was hanging next door in a window directly across from her dining room. “There is absolutely no question that what happened to Ms. Dinges was despicable, traumatizing and completely unacceptable," Worthy said. The average person would not own a klan flag, which is a true symbol of hatred,” Dinges said.

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. – Visitors who went to a Grosse Pointe Park gym in late December are being notified that they might have been exposed to COVID-19 after a person tested positive. An individual who went to the Meade Fitness Center in Grosse Pointe Park during the week of Dec. 28-30 tested positive for the virus, according to authorities. Anyone who was at the Meade Fitness Center that week is being contacted about their possible exposure to COVID-19. The Lavins Activity Center is being closed from Tuesday (Jan. 5) until 7 a.m. Monday (Jan. 11), the business announced. Staff members will be tested for COVID-19, and the building will be sanitized and deep cleaned, the announcement says.

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. – A suspect armed with a knife broke into a home in Grosse Pointe Park, police said. Police were called to the 900 block of Bedford Road at 2:20 a.m. on Wednesday on the report of a home invasion. The suspect broke into an attached garage and went into the home, the door had been left unlocked from the garage, police said. The homeowner was on the couch at the time the suspect broke in and the homeowner caught the suspect. When caught by the homeowner, the intruder took off on foot.

GROSSE POINTE PARK, MICH. – The water is being shut off in the 1000 block of Nottingham in Grosse Pointe Park at around 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5 as part of an emergency water main repair. The Finn It Four Miler is raising money for charities that were close to Finn Huston’s heart. Last year, the transgender teen was riding his bike when he was hit and killed. The Grosse Point Park teen was riding his bike home after work when he was hit by a car. The image is now the symbol of the Finn It 4 Miler which will be held on Oct. 10.

Robert Bashara, a former Rotary Club president in suburban Detroit who was convicted of arranging his wifes murder, has died, more than five years after he was sentenced to life in prison, the Corrections Department said Tuesday. Bashara, 62, died Monday at a hospital, said spokesman Chris Gautz, who declined to offer additional details. Bashara, known as Master Bob, was accused of hiring a handyman to kill Jane Bashara so he could devote more time to cavorting with other women who shared his desire for sexual bondage and domination. WHITMORE LAKE, Mich. Bob Bashara, who was convicted of plotting his wifes murder in 2012, died earlier this week while serving a life sentence. His wifes sister said shes disappointed Bashara didnt serve more of his prison time for the pain he caused. I am disappointed he only spent eight years in prison, said Julie Rowe, Jane Basharas sister, in a statement. Joe Gentz, who worked as Bob Basharas handyman, admitted to strangling Jane Bashara in the garage of the Grosse Pointe Park home. Authorities said Bob Bashara arranged the murder so he could pursue his BDSM lifestyle as Master Bob with a mistress and other women.

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Mich. – Convicted murderer Bob Bashara has died. Bashara was sentenced to life in prison in January 2015 after he was convicted of plotting to have his wife killed in 2012. GROSSE POINTE, Mich. Dozens of parents gathered Sunday to protest the Grosse Pointe Public School systems back-to-school plan. The district made the decision to have all students start with remote learning. While parents of Detroit students have protested against in-person school classes, Grosse Pointe parents rallied for the opposite. Grosse Pointe school officials said theyre planning to get back into the classroom when its safe, but that wasnt good enough for parents. While they noted what some parents wanted ultimately, the district said they just didnt feel it was safe to return to class.

GROSSE POINTE, Mich. A Grosse Pointe Park teacher is getting national recognition for turning learning into a real life business. Susan Howey is teaching her fourth grade students how to run their own business. Their purpose is to blow up your favorite people or pets to cheer them on -- but the real purpose is much more than that. The project has won Howey a Leavy Award, a national award given to teachers for excellence in private enterprise education. Howey said she hopes to continue the business with her new fourth grade students even if classes go online this fall.

GROSSE POINTE, Mich. Another Michigan school district has decided to begin the upcoming school year entirely online amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Grosse Pointe Public School System Superintendent Gary Niehaus announced Friday that the district will start the school year with remote learning only, with a plan to gradually reintroduce students to in-person learning. Officials say a task force developed plans for in-person learning, virtual learning and a hybrid of both options -- which has been required by Michigan Gov. Niehaus said Friday that the districts intention is to transition to a hybrid or traditional in-person learning model, but only once it is safe to do so amid the pandemic. As the district moves to begin the school year fully online, officials say staff will still have access to child care, school buildings and learning materials.
