Norman “Turkey” Stearnes played for the Detroit Stars in 11 of his 18 professional seasons in the Negro Leagues.

For Ike McKinnon, the former Detroit Police Chief, the inclusion is great news because his father played in the Negro Leagues in Alabama.

This Juneteenth, a group of high schoolers is paying homage to a particular part of Metro Detroit’s history.

This Sunday is Juneteenth and there will be celebrations across our community and the country. And because the federal holiday falls on a Sunday, it will also be observed nationally on Monday. And on that day, you are invited to the long-anticipated rededication of Hamtramck Stadium, which includes a Negro Leagues tribute game followed by a special homage to a prominent former negro-league player.

On Thursday (March 24), Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence announced millions of dollars to support projects in her district.

The historic Hamtramck Stadium is set to get a multi-million dollar renovation.

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. Hamtramck Stadium will receive a facelift worth nearly $50,000 through a National Park Service grant approved on Thursday by the Wayne County Commission. Hamtramck Stadium is a historic ballpark where baseball Hall of Fame members Turkey Stearnes, Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige and many other Negro League legends once played. The grant involves no county money and is provided through the park services African American Civil Rights of the 20th Century grant program. The stadium was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. The Friends of Hamtramck Stadium, a local organization, has formed to help finance additional renovations at the site.

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. Detroit native rock star Jack White is usually on stage, but Thursday afternoon he hit the field in a charity baseball game benefiting the historic Hamtramck Stadium. The game brought together a group of locals, dubbed the Motor City All-Stars, to play against the Dallas-based Warstic Woodmen. The goal is to raise enough money to renovate the stadium and bring it back to its former glory. Hamtramck Stadium is one of only 12 remaining Negro League baseball stadiums.
