One problem in resuming fully in-person operations at the Capitol is the lack of vaccinations for thousands of staff to the 435 House members. Give me a break.โItโs clear that Democrats are more emotionally spent than House Republicans, who bolstered their ranks in the last election despite Trump's loss. In February, the House voted to remove Greene from her committee assignments because of her lengthy history of outrageous social media posts and other actions. House OKs George Floyd Act as Democrats avoid 'defund' clash
Scott Applewhite)WASHINGTON โ House Democrats passed the most ambitious effort in decades to overhaul policing nationwide, avoiding a potential clash with moderates in their own party who were wary of reigniting the โdefund the policeโ debate they say hurt them during last fall's election. Approved 220-212 late Wednesday, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act is named for the man whose killing by police in Minnesota last Memorial Day sparked demonstrations nationwide. โWe want to feel safe when we encounter law enforcement. โOur law enforcement officers need more funding not less,โ Rep. Scott Fitzgerald, R-Wis. Another possible point of contention is provisions easing standards for prosecution of law enforcement officers accused of wrongdoing.
With Biden's backing, Dems revive bill to overhaul policing
House Democrats are hustling to pass the most ambitious effort in decades to overhaul policing. The bill would ban chokeholds and โqualified immunityโ for law enforcement and create national standards for policing in a bid to bolster accountability. โOur law enforcement officers need more funding not less,โ Rep. Scott Fitzgerald, R-Wis., said during Wednesday's debate. AdPolice unions and other law enforcement groups have argued that, without such legal protections, fear of lawsuits will stop people from becoming police officers โ even though the measure permits such suits only against law enforcement agencies, rather than all public employees. California Rep. Karen Bass, who authored the bill, understands the challenge some House members face in supporting it.

(AP Photo/Andrew Harnik)WASHINGTON โ Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene lashed out Friday at โmoronsโ in both parties who voted to kick her off her committees, a day after the House meted out the unprecedented punishment that Democrats said sheโd earned by spreading hateful and violent conspiracy theories. Underscoring the political vise her inflammatory commentary has clamped her party into, all but 11 Republicans voted against the Democratic move on Thursday but none rose to defend her lengthy history of outrageous social media posts. Even social media stars like Greene could find it harder to define themselves without the spotlights that committees provide. That chamberโs minority leader, Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., this week called Greeneโs words a โcancerโ on the GOP and country.

โThe President continues to support the cancelling of student debt to bring relief to students and families,โ Psaki tweeted. Forgiving $50,000 in student debt would cost an estimated $650 billion, Warren said.

State denies improper IG firing, defends Saudi arms sales
(Kevin Dietsch/Pool via AP)WASHINGTON โ The State Department on Wednesday rejected Democrats' charges of improperly firing its independent inspector general and defended its weapons sales to Saudi Arabia. Linickโs firing was one of several dismissals by Trump of people charged with preventing fraud and abuse in the government. The State Department officials told the committee that Pompeo acted appropriately on all counts. The IG concluded that the arms sales did not violate the letter of the law but said the department did not take enough action to limit civilian casualties. Members of Congress had been blocking some of the sales because they might contribute to the human rights disaster in Yemen.
Georgia candidate's post removed for inciting violence
ATLANTA Facebook removed a photo illustration showing a Republican congressional candidate in Georgia posing with a rifle next to three Democratic House members, saying Friday that it violated the social media platform's policy against inciting violence. Greene's post featured four separate photos that had been combined to show her posing with a rifle next to Democratic U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar. After her Aug. 11 runoff victory, she inveighed against spineless Republicans" and promised to kick Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi out of Congress. But she denied in a statement Friday that she was trying to incite violence. Those videos brought her criticism in the primary, with some Georgia Republicans pulling their support, but opposition eased after her runoff win over neurosurgeon John Cowan.

Immigration opens ideological fault lines for 2020 Democrats
The Vermont senator released a detailed immigration policy proposal on Thursday, writing, "Unauthorized presence in the United States is a civil, not a criminal, offense." He vowed to repeal existing statutes that put "border crossings on par with other forms of immigration violations, such as overstaying a visa." South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg has suggested he'd support making illegal border crossings civil offenses, but not in cases in which "fraud is involved," a potentially key caveat. Former Vice President Joe Biden also hasn't fully backed decriminalization of illegal border crossings, saying during a July presidential debate , "If you cross the border illegally, you should be able to be sent back. His advisers shrugged off concerns that decriminalizing illegal border crossings may make their campaign, or those of other Democrats, seem soft on immigration.
US Rep. Ilhan Omar divorces husband in Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS, MN Rep. Ilhan Omar has officially divorced from her husband in Minnesota, just a month after she filed a petition saying there was an "irretrievable breakdown" in their marriage. Omar and Ahmed Hirsi had been married since January 2018 but were longtime partners. Omar says Hirsi is the father of her three children. The divorce comes months after a Washington, D.C., woman accused the Democratic congresswoman of having an affair with her husband. When Omar was asked at the time whether she was separated from Hirsi or dating someone, she told WCCO-TV, "No, I am not."

Scott Applewhite, File)BOSTON, MA Democratic U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley says she's being courted by top party candidates for president for her endorsement. Pressley told The Associated Press Tuesday she's been approached by top Democrats including the campaigns of Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden but said she's focused on local elections. Asked when she'll endorse, Pressley said, "I'll move when I move."
Ocasio-Cortez, Omar and Tlaib to endorse Bernie Sanders for president
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, along with progressive freshmen Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, are endorsing Sen. Bernie Sanders for president, several sources told CNN on Wednesday. Omar cited Sanders' progressive proposals, which have distinguished him from other 2020 hopefuls even as the Democratic Party has moved leftward. "I think Sen. Sanders has that. I also think Sen. Warren has that. "And it's why I believe Bernie Sanders is the best candidate to take on Donald Trump in 2020."
Trump calls House Dems leading impeachment inquiry 'savages'
Getty Images(CNN) - President Donald Trump called a group of House Democrats "savages" -- language he has previously used for terrorists and gang members -- as Democrats begin revving up their impeachment inquiry into the President's actions regarding Ukraine. In a tweet Saturday morning, Trump unleashed his new broadside against House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff and Judiciary Committee Chair Jerry Nadler. In the past, Trump has used the word "savages" in speeches and at campaign rallies to refer to the terrorist group ISIS and the violent gang MS-13. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry this week over the allegations that Trump attempted to pressure a foreign leader for political gain. Tasked by Pelosi to lead the inquiry, Schiff is preparing for hearings, subpoenas and depositions as soon as next week as Democrats try to finish the probe this fall.

"We cannot let Trump and Netanyahu succeed in hiding the cruel reality of the occupation from us. Tlaib declined to visit citing the conditions placed on her entry by the Israeli government and the trip was canceled. When she spoke about her mother and herself having to go through "dehumanizing checkpoints," Tlaib grew visibly emotional. They were subjected to a series of racist tweets from Trump last month, in which he told them to "go back" to their "broken" countries. GOP group removes post calling congresswomen "Jihad Squad"
President Donald TrumpCHICAGO - An Illinois Republican group has apologized and removed from its Facebook page a post that showed images of four Democratic congresswomen who have been criticized by President Donald Trump and referred to them as the "Jihad Squad." The post appeared Friday night on the Republican County Chairman's Association page. The Chicago Tribune reported that it showed images of Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib on a poster. It said: "Political jihad is their game," and "If you don't agree with their socialist ideology, you're racist." Mark Shaw, president of the GOP group, condemned what he called an "unauthorized" post and apologized to anyone who was offended.
Trump claims to disavow racist chant after pressure from allies
He also heard from close allies and aides -- including his daughter, Ivanka -- concerned the chant could come to define another dark and racially divisive campaign. Speaking to reporters, Trump claimed to have attempted to stop the chant Wednesday night by resuming his speech -- "I started speaking very quickly," he said -- an assertion refuted by video of the event. In early morning phone calls, Trumps' allies relayed concerns to senior White House officials and the President himself. Ivanka Trump, the president's daughter and senior adviser, spoke with the President about the chant and expressed her concerns, according to a person familiar with the matter. "It was quite a chant," Trump said.
GOP lawmaker condemns chant at Trump rally
I woke up today equally disgusted - chants like 'send her back' are ugly, wrong, & would send chills down the spines of our Founding Fathers. Omar responded to the rally last night, saying on Twitter, "I am where I belong, at the people's house and you're just gonna have to deal!" Omar's message appeared next to a picture of her on the House floor with the American flag in the background. The chant at Trump's rally comes as the President has repeatedly attacked Omar as well as the three other progressive Democratic congresswomen of color known as "The Squad" using racist language. The House voted on Tuesday to approve a resolution condemning the President's racist comments directed at the members of Congress.
Omar did 'go back' to Minnesota to talk health care
At a town hall meeting on universal health care Thursday, Omar exercised the American freedoms the President said she should forsake if she doesn't like how he's running the country. Omar, arguing for expanded coverage without co-pays and high health care premiums, didn't come across as the crazed American-hating Communist that Trump has been demonizing all week. The President was an afterthought at the health care town hall, though his racist attacks on Omar and her colleagues shaped the political backdrop to the event after five tumultuous days. Democrats are arguing with Republicans and among themselves about issues -- above all health care -- but also climate change and paying for college that have energized the liberal grass roots. But Trump, despite repeatedly vowing to dismantle Obamacare and issuing vague vows to provide much better health care has never offered anything like the specifics aired in Minnesota.
AP FACT CHECK: Trump goes after Omar at rally
A look at claims from his rally in North Carolina:OMARTRUMP quotes Omar as saying: "You don't say 'America' with this intensity. Trump is continuing to assail Omar and three other liberal Democratic women of color, challenging their loyalty to the U.S. THE FACTS: The bargain health insurance plans Trump talks about are cheaper because they skimp on benefits such as maternity or prescription drug coverage and do not guarantee coverage of pre-existing conditions. In fact, there are some signs that growth is slowing, partly because of Trump's trade fights with China and Europe. Trump is pushing the Federal Reserve chairman, Jerome Powell, to cut short-term interest rates to shore up the economy.
London mayor condemns Trump's 'blatant unashamed racism'
CNN(CNN) - London Mayor Sadiq Khan stood up for Rep. Ilhan Omar and the rest of "The Squad" as he joined dozens of British politicians in condemning U.S. President Donald Trump's "blatant unashamed racism" against the four Democratic congresswomen. The mayor, who, like Omar, is Muslim, added that "their home is America, but their message crosses borders." The letter, written by the campaign group Hope Not Hate and circulated on Thursday, said: "We are disgusted by Donald Trump's attack on you. His blatant, unashamed racism has appalled people around the world." Khan and Trump have repeatedly sparred in public, most recently during the President's state visit to the UK in June.
AP FACT CHECK: Trump falsely claims Omar praised al-Qaida
WASHINGTON - In trying to make the case that Rep. Ilhan Omar loves terrorists, President Donald Trump put words in her mouth. Nor has Trump explained why he is assailing all four women and the "love they have for enemies like al-Qaida." THE FACTS: It's true that plenty of critics thought Omar sounded dismissive about the 2001 terrorist attacks in a comment in a speech in March . Those remarks, though, did not express love "for enemies like al-Qaida," as Trump had it. But she also noted that "what we know, and what Islam teaches us, and what I always say, is that love trumps hate."

GOP won't fully rebuke Trump attacks on women lawmakers
Some Republicans spoke up against Trump's suggestion that the women should "go back" to the countries they came from. But others leveled their criticism of Trump in careful comments that also criticized the women. Most notably, the GOP leadership in Congress said more than most by staying silent or defending the president's incendiary remarks. Asked if Trump's comments were racist, the top Republican in the House, Kevin McCarthy of California, said: "This is about ideology. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, the only black Republican senator, said Trump made "unacceptable personal attacks" and used "racially offensive language."
