The Holland restaurant owner is accused of operating her business without a license, since MDARD suspended Pavlos-Hackney’s food establishment license on Jan. 20, officials said. An administrative law judge ordered on Feb. 11 that the Holland restaurant owner’s license suspension continues. According to the Allegan County Health Department, the restaurant failed to practice COVID mitigation strategies such as mask use and social distancing. Throughout the pandemic, more than 40 Michigan establishments have had liquor licenses suspended due to their alleged failure to comply with the state’s health orders.

CHICAGO – A Michigan woman has been charged with murder in the deaths of her newborn twin sons more than 17 years ago, police said Saturday. Antoinette Briley, 41, of Holland, Michigan, was charged Friday with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of her sons. Cook County detectives eventually identified Briley as the victims’ potential birth mother. Detectives traveled to Holland, Michigan, and obtained a discarded cigarette containing Briley’s DNA, which was matched to the DNA from the victims. Police learned Briley was in Cook County and took her into custody after a traffic stop in suburban Oak Lawn.

SPRING LAKE, Mich. A Michigan Department of Natural Resources conversation officer rescued an elderly woman from a burning mobile home Wednesday evening in Spring Lake. According to a press release from the DNR, officer Robert Slick, who was off-duty at the time, was jogging at about 5:30 p.m. when he spotted smoke from a distance. The department is proud of Officer Slick and the gentleman who assisted him, said Gary Hagler, chief of the DNR Law Enforcement Division. A conservation officer is never truly off-duty and is trained to respond to situations like this.DNR officials said Slick stayed with the woman until medical personnel arrived and evaluated her. Slick has been with the DNR Law Enforcement Division since 2015 and patrols in Ottawa County.

Iain Rowe drowned at Holland State Park on June 6, a day of high waves and warnings. Miranda Rowe, 33, of Spring Lake Township pleaded guilty in Holland District Court. Its not unheard of but its a little unusual to have a parent charged in the drowning death of a child. At least 36 people in four states have drowned in Lake Michigan this year, according to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project.

PARK TOWNSHIP, Mich. Two men have been rescued from Lake Michigan after they were caught in a rip current while swimming. The 34-year-old and 32-year-old men were at Holland State Park in western Michigans Park Township early Sunday evening when they were swept into deeper water, according to the Ottawa County sheriff's office. A jet ski operator was able to get one of the men to a pier where bystanders began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Another jet ski operator was able to take the second man to a beach where he was evaluated by paramedics. The sheriffs office said a no-swimming notice was posted at the state park where three people have drowned this year.
