Dr. Kamran Rashid Khan, or as he’s known by his stage name, Lazarus, has been working on the frontline against the COVID-19 pandemic. He is from Detroit, but currently working in Las Vegas. He attended Wayne State and Michigan State universities. “I’m mixed up in two worlds,” Khan said, adding that he is bringing his knowledge of medicine to the hip hop community. DETROIT – You may remember Ellen Latzen from her childhood acting roles in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” as Ruby Sue or even for her role in “Fatal Attraction.”Well, these days, Latzen, now 40, is enjoying life right here in Metro Detroit. Latzen is not from the area, but recently moved to Michigan for work and her relationship. But possibly her most memorable role was as Randy Quaid's daughter "Ruby Sue" in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Considered one of the greatest Christmas movies of all-time, this film still captures the hearts and funny bones of millions around the globe. She moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to attend the California College of Arts and Crafts, and eventually started working.

Scary movies are always a great way to get into the Halloween spirit, but it’s really the music that makes the hairs on your arm stand on end. One man is making a spooky soundtrack and Uniquely Detroit photojournalist Alex Atwell showed off his skills and the history behind his sounds. Slasher Dave has always been obsessed with music and scary music, now he creates the sounds and music with a special machine that helps him make the ultimate eerie soundtrack. The Detroit Pepper Company in Detroit’s East English Village is hoping to serve the community with tasty food and healthy, natural ingredients. The Detroit Pepper Company serves salads, bowls, and smoothies, but their most iconic dishes are their variety of stuffed peppers. Imagine owning a record so rare and so unique as the city of Detroit! That is what happened to people at Melodies and Memories in Eastpointe. Back in 2018 the record store found a unique record that is considered the holy grail of records from Detroits Motown label. The owner of Melodies and Memories, Denise Zieja, spoke to photojournalist Alex Atwell about how she found this holy grail of records and revealed the famous Detroiter she sold it to. Today we took a trip back to when photographer Alex Atwell took us to a spot thats Uniquely Detroit. The museum is called Dabls Mbad African Bead Museum. We have one goal which was to expose the culture of African people to the people of Detroit, said owner Olayami Dabls. Some of the items in the museum are extremely rare. Stahls Auto Museum in Chesterfield is a car lovers dream. It is the home of historical automobiles and most of them were built, manufactured, and designed in the Detroit area. Visiting the Stahls Automotive Foundation is a reminder that, at some point, cars were more than just a form of transportation. At the museum, you can also see the collection of gas pumps, road signs, oil cans, and other car-related accessories from the Depression-era. DETROIT – Scammers targeting Michigan residents who have legitimately filed for unemployment are causing even more delays in the system as officials are forced to investigate. These scams are affecting thousands of Michiganders who have filed for unemployment, and many others who haven’t filed. READ: New problem keeps more Michigan residents from getting unemployment checksThe problem has gotten so serious that some people who have filed legitimately are having their accounts put on hold as the Unemployment Insurance Agency investigates. Scammers are also working to steal the identities of people who haven’t filed for unemployment. Our WDIV human resources team received letters that appeared to be from the unemployment agency about employees who never filed.

Detroits favorite ginger ale is Vernors! The story of Vernors begins with James Vernors who worked in Detroit in a drug store. He then inlisted in the civil war and was away for 4 years as his ginger ale was aging. When he returned from war he opened his own drug store and finally opened his barrel of ginger ale extract. Wunderlich says Vernors is a soft drink that is meant to be drank by itself unlike other ginger ales that are meant to be mixers.

DETROIT – Coronavirus has left the streets of Downtown Detroit eerily quiet and empty. With most businesses shut down and a “stay-at-home” order in effect for Michigan, many downtown areas are at a standstill. Uniquely Detroit’s Alex Atwell took a ride through Downtown Detroit to see just how empty the area is due to the virus. Watch the video above.

It‘s one thing to travel the world taking pictures of the life that surrounds you. It’s another thing to travel the world capturing the life of an internationally-known musician. Deputat started taking pictures for Real Detroit Weekly around 2002. So he bought a camera, on a shoestring budget, and began taking pictures for the magazine. Once he left Real Detroit, and Detroit in general for Los Angeles, Jeremy began working for Interscope Records.

The Detroit Music Hall has hosted more performances than any other venue in the city according to its President and Artistic Director Vince Paul. Alex Atwell took a deep dive into the Music Hall and to learn more about its history. Paul took us on the tour of the building and shared how the Music Hall was built with floors and mahogany walls that curve and reflect sound. This was the best surround sound they could get in the 1920′s. One important picture was a photograph of Walt Disney Studios installing the very first surround system in the Detroit Music Hall.

DETROIT – An amazing exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts explores the rich history of collecting African American art in Detroit. “Detroit Collects: Selections of African American Art from Private Collections" runs through March 15, 2020, at the DIA. The exhibition will demonstrate local collectors’ interest in the diverse media, styles, genres, influences and subject matter that inspired them to collect art created by African Americans. Detroit jazz legend Marcus Belgrave died back in 2015. But his legacy lives on in the next generation of musicians. Belgrave died in 2015 of heart failure. DETROIT – Back in the 1970s and 80s - the roller rink was the place to be. There are several roller rinks still operating around Metro Detroit these days. Uniquely Detroit's Alex Atwell takes us inside Detroit RollerCade - the oldest black-owned roller skating rink in the city and possibly the country. Watch the Live in the D story in the video player above. RollerCade is located at 2130 Schaefer Highway in Detroit and has open skating on Saturday afternoon and evening.

And I feel pretty lucky to be able to do it in Detroit. Almost anywhere you look in the city, you'll find something that attracts the eye: inspiring architecture, unique street art, historical markers, and people. It's the people who really separate Detroit from the rest of the parts of the world who share the same creative scenery. The photographers in the city I have met are both creative and talented. They share a collective respect for the city that is really energizing -- and they share it publicly on Instagram.

But Citywide Poets is a program for Detroit kids that gives them an opportunity to flex their creative muscles. Citywide Poets is part of the InsideOut literary arts program and is an after school poetry troupe for Detroit teens. They offer mentorship from adult poets and writers who possess strong publication and performance credentials. Will Langford is the high school coordinator for InsideOut and Citywide Poets. Brown has stepped up for Citywide Poets with support in securing funding from the Knight Foundation -- and donated proceeds from his recent Bruiser Brigade Thanksgiving concert at the Majestic Theater.
