The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit hosts a variety of programs for kids that are both virtual and in-person. For example, Its Girls on the Run program works to empower young girls in the community. City of Ann Arbor seeks input on new pedestrian project in Bandemer Park area
ANN ARBOR โ Having just completed the Allen Creek Railroad Berm Project, the city of Ann Arbor is now setting its sights on the creation of a new pedestrian tunnel beneath the railroad near Bandemer Park. City officials and Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission staff will hold a public online meeting Wednesday, Dec. 2 to share project goals, refined design based on feedback from residents and the feasibility study recommendations. They will also open up the meeting for public comment after their presentation. City and county officials will also share a proposal to extend the Border-to-Border Trail through Barton Nature Area. Celebrate International Day of the Girl with Girls on the Run virtual 5K
ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ Run, walk, jump or skip your way to a 5K and support girls in Washtenaw County. In honor of International Day of the Girl on Oct. 11, Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan is hosting a virtual 5K to raise funds for its programs to help girls around Southeast Michigan. Money raised through the virtual 5K goes towards scholarships for girls that want to take part in Girls on the Runโs afterschool programs. WeRun313 running club aims to connect with Black runners in Detroit, gives away running shoes
DETROIT โ WeRun313, a Detroit running club aiming to connect Black runners and help grow the sport in the community, is taking a new step to help their mission. โWe Run 313 is a social run club that connects like-minded individuals, through running to build a healthier and happy community,โ said co-founder Lance Woods. Woods, who started the club with Joe Robinson, said the clubโs mission defines its motto -- โConnect. Joe and I noticed that a lot of people werenโt running in proper running shoes,โ Woods said. Robinson said, โToday (Tuesday), WeRun313 has linked up with Playmakers Fit and we come together to give away about 150 pairs of shoes, running shoes."
Virtual running event held in remembrance of Grosse Pointe Park teen
GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. โ A four mile run in honor of a Grosse Pointe Park teen who was killed last year is being held virtually because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The Finn It Four Miler is raising money for charities that were close to Finn Hustonโs heart. Last year, the transgender teen was riding his bike when he was hit and killed. The Grosse Point Park teen was riding his bike home after work when he was hit by a car. The image is now the symbol of the Finn It 4 Miler which will be held on Oct. 10.
Virtual Bookin it for Kids race to benefit Ann Arbors Family Learning Institute
ANN ARBOR, Mich. Go for a run and raise money for childrens tutoring services in the Ann Arbor area. The Family Learning Institute, a nonprofit literacy organization, is hosting its first-ever Bookin it for Kids virtual walk/run fundraiser. Money raised by the race will go towards development of FLIs literacy programs and materials that help children reach grade-level writing and reading proficiency. Runners can also submit photos in different categories like Most Unique Race Route and Best Outfit for the chance to win gift cards from companies, including Zingermans and Ann Arbor Running Company. Heres how 25 sports have been divided into high, moderate, low COVID-19 risk categories
DETROIT Will it be safe for children, high schoolers or anybody to play sports amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic? Experts have divided 25 popular sports into three categories: high, moderate and low risk. The National Federation of State High School Associations released their list, which is based on the amount of close, sustained contact, along with other factors. Oklahoma recently rejected a plan that would have required social distancing and allowed all high school sports to resume without restrictions. One idea being considered by many states would change the calendar to shift lower risk sports to fall and move higher risk ones to the spring.
