ERIE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – One person was killed and four others were injured when a driver crossed the center line of Telegraph Road and caused a three-car crash, police said.

The crash happened at 11:45 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2024, on Telegraph Road, south of Erie Road, in Erie Township.

Officials said a 37-year-old Monroe man was driving a black 1995 GMC Sierra pickup truck north on Telegraph Road with a 41-year-old Monroe woman in the front passenger seat.

The driver crossed the center line of the road and crashed head-on into a gray 2014 Chevrolet Equinox, which was driven by a 58-year-old Dearborn man, according to police. A 21-year-old Toledo woman was in the back seat.

The collision caused the pickup to overturn on its right side in the middle of the road, officials said. The Equinox stopped in the ditch to the west.

Moments later, a 19-year-old Monroe woman driving north in a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee tried to avoid the overturned pickup, but she struck its front end. That pushed the pickup backwards on its right side, and it came to rest on the northbound shoulder.

The Jeep came to a controlled stop on the west shoulder of Telegraph Road.

Officials said everyone except the back-seat passenger in the Equinox was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The airbags deployed in the Equinox, but not in the pickup or the Jeep.

The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Jeep and the passenger in the pickup were taken to ProMedica Toledo Hospital. They are stable.

Both people in the Equinox were taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Toledo. They are also stable.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said speed and careless driving were factors in the crash.

Officials continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call 734-240-7541.
