Hyperbaric bill proposed after child's death in Oakland County

The Oxford Center in Troy remains closed following the death of five-year-old Thomas Cooper in a hyperbaric chamber explosion, with its founder and three employees facing criminal charges. In response, State Senator Stephanie Chang and State Rep. Sharon MacDonell are drafting legislation to mandate accreditation by the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society for hyperbaric treatment facilities. Currently, only two such facilities are accredited in Michigan, none in Metro Detroit. The Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society is collaborating with regulatory bodies to establish state licensing requirements, while Fieger Law, representing the Cooper family, supports the proposed regulation.
