August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

In a rundown Chicago recording studio in 1927, tensions flare as Ma Rainey, the “Mother of the Blues” and her band record jazz and blues standards. Ma Rainey fiercely defends her music, while her cocky trumpet player Levee dreams of making his own fame. August Wilson’s powerful work explores themes of rage, racism, self-hatred, and exploitation beyond the music. You can see ‘August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ at the Detroit Repertory Theatre now through March 2nd.

It’s the last weekend to check out the Detroit Auto Show! Buckle up, there are a lot of new vehicles to see! Car enthusiasts and families can enjoy the newest vehicles, exotic supercars, luxury, and modified cars, the latest Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Corvette models, technology displays, interactive track activations, custom car exhibits, and more. The biggest highlight this year will be four indoor test tracks and a “Detroit Through the Decades” exhibit featuring classic cars.

Planet Ant Theatre is at it again. Welcome to Slurptopia is a surreal, campy, fantasy-driven satirical comedy inspired by Y2K internet culture, city pop, and theme restaurants. Using humor, it paints an allegory of modern society and with wit explores themes of impulsivity, hedonism, maximalism, and free will. Tickets can be purchased online or at the Planet Ant box office.

Looking for something fun to get into this weekend? Check out Bowers School Farm in Bloomfield Hills. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through February 23rd Bowers School Farm is free and open to the public for visitors to meet their animals, enjoy their cozy bonfires and to indulge in a variety of comfort foods from their Farm Kitchen and Store. Visitors can also purchase tickets to ride down their tubing hill that takes you through a giant light tunnel. It is recommended to purchase tubing tickets in advance due to its popularity.
