The Ark’s 38th Annual Storytelling Festival

The Ark

The Ark’s Annual Storytelling Festival returns this weekend for three days of marvelous entertainment. Friday kicks off with a Liar’s Contest where six contestants will be judged while they try their best attempt to share a story that is not true. Saturday will have both locally based and nationally known storytellers, while Sunday will be more geared toward all ages combining traditional Japanese theatre, music, origami, magic, and storytelling.

Jake Russell Presents: Do The Knowledge

Last chance to see Do the Knowledge presented by Jake Russell at Planet Ant. While it isn’t all flowers and butterflies, this original comedy production will have you laughing like there’s no tomorrow. Do the Knowledge is a different and highly authentic show that puts a comedic lens on a very dark true story. Jokes will come to life and be acted out as you hear them told to paint a picture and to educate people about the Black experience in America. The show features stand-up, sketch comedy, monologues, and even a PowerPoint presentation in the style of a TED talk. Comedians will talk about difficult topics concerning racism, history, and even their own experiences being Black in America.

August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

In a rundown Chicago recording studio in 1927, tensions flare as Ma Rainey, the “Mother of the Blues” and her band record jazz and blues standards. Ma Rainey fiercely defends her music, while her cocky trumpet player Levee dreams of making his own fame. August Wilson’s powerful work explores themes of rage, racism, self-hatred, and exploitation beyond the music. You can see ‘August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ at the Detroit Repertory Theatre now through March 2nd.

Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through February 23rd Bowers School Farm is free and open to the public for visitors to meet their animals, enjoy their cozy bonfires and to indulge in a variety of comfort foods from their Farm Kitchen and Store. Visitors can also purchase tickets to ride down their tubing hill that takes you through a giant light tunnel. It is recommended to purchase tubing tickets in advance due to its popularity.
