Ann Arbor spot serves up Yemeni coffee and pastries

Socotra Coffee House offers Adeni Chai, honeycombs, and more

Your taste buds can get a glimpse of the flavors of Yemeni coffee at a family-owned coffee shop called Socotra Coffee House in Ann Arbor.

Zayd Alghazali and Murshed Alrabeei appeared on “Live In The D” to share the story of Socotra Coffee House. Alrabeei said they were inspired by Yemen’s rich culture and coffee landscapes. He explained that their family already had a bakery in business, so they decided to combine the two and share their family’s culture with the city of Ann Arbor.

Socotra’s medium roast has a chocolatey flavor, while their light roast has a sweet to a fruity flavor, Alrabeei shared. He added that they also offer Qishr, which is made from the husk or shell of the coffee. As the temperature heats up, you might opt for an iced drink, such as their “refreshers”. They come in flavors like mango dragon fruit, pineapple passion, and strawberry acai.

Socotra Coffee House sells a variety of different pastries, including honeycombs, which Alghazali described as a traditional Yemeni pastry. He said it’s fluffy rich bread with cream cheese in the middle and honey served on top. Alghazali explained that they have a variety of flavors.
