Perfect your push-up game

Fitness & nutrition expert hands out workout advice

Push-ups can be dreadful and are often used as punishment for different sports or even the military. However, they’re great for you, and there are plenty of ways to build up the strength to do one. Fitness and nutrition expert Jody Trierweiler appeared on “Live in the D” to explain what steps you need to take to perfect your push up game.

The first thing you should work on if you can’t do a push-up is your core. To work on improving your core you should try holding a plank position for a minute. If holding a plank on your forearms is too difficult then performing a plank on your hands is a great alternative.

The next thing you should improve is your chest. You can better your chest muscles by doing chest fly’s. To perform a chest fly you have to lay down on the ground or on a bench with some dumbbells. Once you’re lying down, extend the dumbbells towards the sky, lower them by stretching your arms while keeping your elbows slightly bent, and then bring them back together.

One more thing you can improve is the front of your shoulder called the anterior deltoid. To improve this muscle, you can grab some dumbbells once again and lock your arm in straight position. Once you’ve done that raise the dumbbell up and back down.

Finally, after working on those exercises for a while you should be able to perform a push-up. To perfect your push-up form you should begin by lifting your hips off the ground. You can then push-up but make sure on the decent from the push-up you come back on a 45° angle.
