Help your pet have a healthy smile

Your pets need to take care of their teeth too

February is National Pet Dental Health Month, and it’s the perfect time to get educated about caring for your pet’s dental health.

Dr. Crystal Sapp, the Vice President of veterinary medicine with Michigan Humane, appeared on “Live In The D” to share some insight.

She stressed the importance of brushing your pet’s teeth daily. Dr. Sapp said you can use pet-friendly toothpaste. She also recommends giving dental chews, even daily.

Another piece of advice is to check your pet’s lips and gums. White, red or swollen gums can be a sign of an issue and means your pet should go to the vet. Feeding your pet a healthy diet is also important for their dental health.

Dr. Sapp encourages having routine exams by a veterinarian to determine if your pet needs an actual anesthetic dental cleaning.
