DETROIT – A Detroit man has been charged with shooting five people at a night club.

The shooting happened at 2:44 a.m. March 29, 2024, at a night club in the 8200 block of West Chicago, officials said.

Damond Lamont Hunter, 32, of Detroit, got into an argument with a group of people, and it escalated into a physical confrontation, according to prosecutors.

Hunter is accused of pulling out a handgun and firing several shots, striking five Detroit men, ages 33, 33, 42, 45, and 48. They all went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“I have seen countless arguments escalate into serious shooting incidents over the most trivial things,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said. “Any time a weapon is introduced, it never ends well. Most times, tragically. We must stop escalating the violence into violence. In this case, the only good thing that came out of it is that no one died.”

Detroit police investigated the shooting, and Hunter was taken into custody at Detroit Metro Airport on April 10.

He’s charged with five counts of assault with intent to murder, five counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, one count of felon in possession of a firearm, and 11 felony firearm violations.

He was arraigned April 13 at 36th District Court and given a $5 million cash bond. That bond amount was upheld at a bond redetermination hearing.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. April 19, and a preliminary examination is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. April 29.
