What’s Going Around: Stomach viruses, strep throat, COVID, outdoor injuries, bug bites, viral illnesses

Here’s our weekly round-up of what illnesses are spreading the most in Metro Detroit communities, according to our local doctors and hospitals.

Wayne County – Stomach viruses, strep throat, COVID, outdoor injuries, bug bites, fungal rashes, sinus headaches

Dr. Kelly Levasseur -- Medical Director of Pediatric Emergency, Children’s Hospital of Michigan

“Strep throat, a vomiting and diarrhea illness and lots of injuries – mostly broken bones. We’re seeing kids falling off bikes, injuring themselves at playgrounds, skateboarding. Kids are also breaking bones falling in their home – off chairs, the backs of couches.”

Dr. Jennifer Stevenson -- Emergency Department, Henry Ford Medical Center Fairlane

“I’m seeing a lot of people come in with viral gastroenteritis (stomach flu). We’re also still seeing strep throat and slightly more COVID cases. A reminder that hand washing is very important!”

Dr. Asha Shajahan -- Primary care provider, Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital Grosse Pointe

“Here’s what we have been seeing this week: 1) cellulitis from bug bites, 2) fungal rashes related to heat 3) sinus headaches.”

Emergency Department, Trinity Health Livonia

“We have seen a slight uptick in COVID admissions and we have been seeing some uptick with viral respiratory illness.”

Oakland County – Stomach viruses, sinus infections, COVID, strep throat, summer injuries, viral illnesses

Dr. Rena Daiza -- Primary Care Physician, Henry Ford Medical Center Bloomfield Twp.

“This week, we have seen many stomach bug cases. Good weather brings outdoor eating and picnics. Make sure to avoid eating food that has been left out, and wash your hands frequently, especially before handling food.”

Sarah Rauner -- Chief Emergency Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital Troy

“We are seeing a lot of our summer injuries right now. Broken bones, lacerations, and bumps and bruises. We are also seeing several viral illnesses going around that include fever, rashes, sore throat and slight upper respiratory symptoms. Wear sunscreen, bug spray and stay hydrated out there.”

Dr. Tim O’Neill -- Clarkston Medical Group

“Still a little bit of Covid. Little bit of strep. And with the pressure changes, it seems like a lot of sinus infections.”

Emergency Department, Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital

“A lot of patients are reporting chest pain. We’re also seeing cases of general pain and falls this week.”

Emergency Department, Trinity Health Oakland

“We have seen a slight increase in COVID patients, as well as a lot of outdoors related injuries still.”

Washtenaw County – Stomach viruses, bacterial infections, upper respiratory infections, COVID

Dr. Marisa Louie -- Medical Director of Children’s Emergency Services, Michigan Medicine

Macomb County – Stomach viruses, outdoor injuries, poison ivy, common cold, sunburn, COVID

Dr. Osama Fashho -- Emergency physician at McLaren Macomb

High temperatures have caused those with a heart condition, even a mild one, to seek care in the ER for chest pains. While common throughout the summer, the long holiday weekend saw many patients seeking care for injuries, both orthopedic and soft tissue.”
