Macomb County man charged in crash that critically injured child without seatbelt

MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 44-year-old man from Macomb Township has been charged in connection with a crash that critically injured a child Aug. 30.

According to authorities, a Ford F-150 drove off 21 Mile Road, near Tilch Road, drove down an embankment and crashed just before 1 p.m. A 13-year-old boy in the vehicle was rushed to a hospital in critical condition before being transported to Children’s Hospital.

Background: Child without seatbelt critically injured in Macomb County crash

Authorities said the father had “multiple bottles of prescription medication and illegal drugs” at the time.

Michael John Shaway was charged Wednesday, Sept. 4, with second-degree child abuse and possession of a controlled substance. Bond was set at $50,000.

The child remains in critical condition at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

The investigation is ongoing.
