Free contraception resources are now available at more than 300 locations through a program for Michigan residents.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that over-the-counter oral birth control pills, emergency contraception, condoms and family planning educational resources are available through the Take Control of Your Birth Control program.

“Everyone deserves the freedom to make their own decisions about their reproductive health,” said Whitmer. “With over 300 locations across Michigan now offering free birth control, emergency contraception, and other essential reproductive health tools, we are taking action to ensure that all Michiganders have the support they need. Decisions about reproductive health care should be between a woman, her doctor, and her trusted community. In Michigan, we must always protect your fundamental right to control your health and your future.”

Where to find free contraception

These resources are available in every county across Michigan.

The locations participating in this program include community partners, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services offices, local health departments and health centers.

An interactive map of the locations was created to show residents more information about how and where to get the resources.

Other resources available

The Take Control of Your Birth Control program also offers Michigan residents information about how they can get supplies in the future.

Residents will get information on how to use insurance to get low-cost or free birth control, and anyone who doesn’t have insurance will get information about how to apply for Medicaid and Plan First! coverage.

These programs offer coverage for services like birth control and STI testing.

Plan First! covers family planning services for people who don’t qualify for traditional Medicaid.

“The goal of this program is to ensure individuals, regardless of their circumstances, have access to tools that allow them to make their own decisions about their health and future,” said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, the State of Michigan’s Chief Medical Executive. “We appreciate the overwhelming support we have received from organizations willing to help distribute free contraception resources to individuals. We want to make sure individuals who need and want these tools can easily obtain them. This campaign reflects the state’s ongoing commitment to ensuring equitable access to reproductive health services.”
