Coin worth Over $2K donated to Salvation Army via red kettle at Kroger in St. Clair Shores

Anonymous donor has been giving to Salvation Army for past 12 years

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A coin worth over $2,500 has been donated to the Salvation Army via red kettle.

It happened at the Kroger on Marter Road in St. Clair Shores.

At first, Monday (Dec. 2) felt like any other day for Ricky Henderson.

That’s until he found out that someone donated a rare South African gold Krugerrand into his red kettle.

“At first, I didn’t know it was in there. Until they took it back to the Salvation Army, that’s when they found out,” said Ricky.

The anonymous donor has been giving to the Salvation Army for the past 12 years.

“It’s a long time. What a wonderful thing to get rid of the Krugerrands in such a wonderful way,” said Kroger shopper Dorothy Toelle.

This year, it’s worth over $2,600, with the money going towards the Salvation Army’s program that shelters over 50 people.

“That is moms, children, single females, single males as well as single fathers,” said Major Shanda Minks with the Salvation Army.

According to the note left behind, however, this is it, as the donors are now all out. Yet the Salvation Army is asking others with the coin to do the same in the future.

“Cause we don’t want to see it be the last year because not only does it bring excitement to us, but it also brings excitement to the community seeing there’s still a mysteriousness about it,” said Major Minks.

But who is this kind soul?

Local 4 spent most of the time trying to find this generous man ourselves to say thanks. Although we were unsuccessful in our efforts, the team is still an amazing example of the Christmas spirit.

“It was the grace of God that what he did was good,” Ricky said.

This came right on time for Giving Tuesday this week.

Remember, you can always donate at any Salvation Army Red Kettle in Detroit or anywhere else where donations are accepted.
