Madison Heights – Family and friends of Robert “Bob” Cavanaugh gathered Saturday night (Dec. 28) to mourn the loss of a man known for his kindness, love of animals, and faith.
Madison Heights Police said Robert Cavanaugh, 60, was beaten to death on Dec. 24, 2024 near Dequindre and 11 Mile Road.

His family said he was bludgeoned with a pipe while trying to rescue a dog its owner had been abusing.
Rodney Beasley, 68, was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, a 4-year felony.
Police said the official cause and manner of Cavanaugh’s death are still under investigation and that they will present the case to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for additional charges once detectives learn more.
Beasley was given a $100,000 bond.
The community came together to honor Cavanaugh’s memory, sharing stories of his life.
“You can tell that there are a lot of people who loved Bob, loved his big heart and kind spirit,” said Pastor Tom Naumann of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Madison Heights. “He was someone who, everywhere he went, he wanted to look out for other people and give of himself.”
Those who knew Cavanaugh say he was deeply compassionate, always looking for ways to help others, including wounded animals and the homeless.
“People don’t understand how sweet he was, and generous,” said Jane Thompson, Cavanaugh’s sister.
For the past four years, Pastor Naumann met with Cavanaugh every week, helping him grow in his faith and service to others.
The Cavanaugh family is now having to deal with funeral costs.
