TROY, Mich. – The NFL Divisional Round matchup between the Detroit Lions and the Washington Commanders at Ford Field is just three days away.
We know some Lions fans wear their hearts on their sleeve. Others, like All-Pro wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, dye all their hair Honolulu blue.
Hair salon “dynfly” locations are offering discounts for people who want to go “All In” and are said to donate a portion of the proceeds to Detroit PAL
Local 4 stopped by the Troy salon, where fans were going all in by dying their hair blue ahead of the game.
St. Brown started his own tradition with blue hair, and diehard fans followed suit, but getting that perfect shade of Honolulu blue is an art.
“I’m excited. I don’t say things ‘cause we’re superstitious here, but I am excited,” said Angela Buccellatto.
Buccellatto drank the Lions Kool-Aid long before it was cool.
“My mom and I are huge Lions fans, we go to games, her bday is in October, and it’s our little tradition,” Buccellatto said.
The lifelong Lions fan is all in with St. Brown, dying her hair in Honolulu blue for the playoffs.
“When he did it last year, and the trend was going around, I did have a little fear of missing out, ‘Like, why didn’t I,’” Buccellatto said.
A few seats over at the salon, 13-year-old Cam Smith was also taking the plunge.
“It’s something I could bond with my mom and I miss school, and I love watching the Lions play football,” said Smith.
When asked how he felt about getting his hair colored, Smith said, “Oh, I love it, I think it’ll be good.”
Smith plays cornerback and wide receiver for the Wyandotte Hawks. Like his idol, Aidan Hutchinson, he is also a dancer.
For him, going blue was a no-brainer.
“I love the way they’re not scared of anything and just go for it, it’s the way I like to play too,” Smith said.
Starting this week, dynfly locations across Metro Detroit offer deals on blue hair dye.
A portion of the proceeds will go to the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL), which helps children get into sports.
“I mean that’s huge, that’s even more reason to do this,” said Buccellatto.
Buccellatto got the look she was going for, and Cam, well, he just likes messing with his mom.
For kids under 12 who are looking to go All In, the Honolulu blue hair dye is $30, and adult streaks are $30; the full head is $70-100 for fans going All In while showing their Lions pride and deals last until the championship parade after the Lions potentially win the Super Bowl.
