Man pleads no contest in crash that killed 7-year-old boy in Detroit

DETROIT – The man charged in connection to a crash that killed a 7-year-old boy and injured three others, including a 5-year-old girl, pleaded no contest.

The crash happened at the intersection of 7 Mile and Mound on Nov. 9, 2024, just after 4:30 p.m.

When Detroit police officers arrived, they found a 7-year-old boy unresponsive next to the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The remaining victims—a 5-year-old girl, a 21-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman—were taken to a local hospital for their injuries.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Ahmad Nyjahjuan Jatta, 30, of Roseville, was speeding on E 7 Mile when he struck the victims' car, killing the 7-year-old. He ran away from the scene but returned hours later. He was then taken into custody.

He was charged with one count of operating while intoxicated causing death, and three counts of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury. He pleaded no contest to all four charges on Jan. 17, 2025.

Jatta is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 24, 2025.
