A 16-year-old has been charged in connection to stabbing another student at an Oakland County high school, officials said.
The teen has been charged with assault with great bodily harm less than murder, carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a weapon in weapons-free schools, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
The stabbing happened at Avondale High School in Auburn Hills in the morning on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Two students allegedly got into a fight in a school bathroom. During the fight, the 16-year-old suspect stabbed a 15-year-old multiple times, including in his leg. Authorities later discovered a kitchen knife in the bathroom.
“This incident is unacceptable. My top priority is ensuring kids feel safe at their school,” said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. “I’m grateful the victim is recovering. This situation could have been much worse for all involved. The accused assailant, who is just 16, will face serious consequences that hopefully serves as a wake-up call.”
The suspect is lodged at Children’s Village. The victim was treated for his injuries at a local hospital.
Officials say the names of the suspect and the victim are not being released at this time because they are minors.
