Watch: Officers in Wayne County save dog trapped in freezing water

WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – A dog was rescued by police officers in Wayne County Monday afternoon after breaking through ice and falling into freezing water.

At around 5:20 p.m. on Feb. 10, 2025, Corporal Bond and Officer Bedsun responded to a call for a dog falling through the ice in the canal at Elizabeth Park in Trenton.

Bedsun went into the icy water, breaking off sections of ice, and Bond helped coordinate efforts from the shallow water. The dog was eventually brought to shore safely and reunited with its owner.

Deputy Chief Neese from the Trenton Police Department praised the officers who rescued the dog, saying, “Their quick thinking, teamwork and willingness to put themselves in harm’s way embody the very essence of public service. Thanks for their bravery, a life was saved today.”

The police department said if you see a person or animal in distress in freezing water, call 911 and avoid putting yourself at risk by attempting a rescue.
