DETROIT – The Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament was filled Tuesday as Archbishop Edward Joseph Weisenburger was installed as the sixth Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit.
“Detroit really is a new experience for me but an experience I’m very excited about,” said the Archbishop.
Archbishop Weisenburger was in Tucson, Arizona, when they received word that Pope Francis wanted him to serve in Detroit.
Among those in attendance was Eugene Suchyta from the Knights of Columbus.
“I think for all of us it’s a continuation but a bit of a new beginning,” said Suchyta, who says he and five other members were there to welcome in the new Archbishop.
“It means everything to us,” said Celina Sarweh.
Her daughter Sarah felt similarly about being in attendance.
“It definitely feels like a glorious experience.”
As for his first orders of business, Archbishop Weisenburger says, he’s going to take his time.
“The first goal is to get to know a placed, anyone who comes in before they know a place comes in with ideas on how they’ll lead is not a good leader.”
The Archbishop is looking forward to getting to know the city and the surrounding communities that make it so unique.
That includes Spanish-speaking parishioners, to which he responded in both English and Spanish.
