Timeline: When to expect wintry mix change into severe thunderstorms in Metro Detroit

Southeast Michigan is bracing for wet weather, and a winter weather advisory has been issued until 10 a.m. Wednesday for Sanilac County.

A Flood Watch is in effect for portions of Southeast Michigan including Metro Detroit 8 p.m. Wednesday until 8 a.m. Thursday.

1 to 2 inches of rainfall is expected as several rounds of heavy showers and thunderstorms move through the area.

Damaging wind and heavy rainfall will be the main threats along with a risk of tornadoes.

Here’s the timeline:

  • Early morning: A wintry mix is likely north of I-69.
  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Heavy, steady rainfall. Slight chance for a severe storm to develop due to a lifting warm front.
  • 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.: Scattered showers. Temperatures continue to rise.
  • 5 p.m. to Midnight: Line of strong to severe storms likely with approaching cold front.

The threat heightens after sunset. Here are the threats:

  • Damaging Wind Gusts of 70 mph possible.
  • Isolated Tornadoes possible.
  • Large hail up to an inch in diameter possible.
  • Flooding possible with an overall of 1-2 inches of rainfall forecasted through Thursday morning.
