VATICAN CITY – Cardinal Kevin Ferrel, the Vatican camerlengo announced Monday morning that Pope Francis has died.
The announcement from the Vatican said “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church, ″

Pope Francis was born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Flores, Argentina.
When he was 21 years old, he had part of his lung removed after struggling with chronic lung disease. He was admitted into Gemelli hospital in Rome on Feb. 14, 2025, due to bronchitis. His hospital stay was extended after developing a respiratory infection and pneumonia.
On March 3, 2025, the Vatican reported his condition was improving and his infection was under control. He was discharged from the hospital on March 23, 2025.
His first public appearance after that was on April 6, 2025.
On Easter Sunday, Pope Francis blessed a crowd in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. Tens of thousands of people lined the streets yesterday shouting “Viva il papa!” (Long live the pope, in Italian).
On Monday, April 21, 2025, one day after Easter Sunday, the Vatican announced his death.
Pope Francis spent his life dedicated to the Church, blessing those around him until his final days.
