Tigers star Tarik Skubal wins AL Cy Young Award after 18-win season

Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal was awarded the Cy Young Award for the American League on Wednesday night.

Skubal, who turned 28 on Wednesday, went 18-4 with a 2.39 ERA and a major league-best 228 strikeouts in 31 starts for the Tigers. He was a unanimous winner in voting for the AL prize by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America that was completed before the playoffs.

Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase (47 saves) and Kansas City starter Seth Lugo (16-9, 3.00) were the other finalists for the AL award to be announced later Wednesday night.

Skubal is the first Tigers pitcher to win the Cy Young since Max Scherzer back in 2013.

Named for the winningest pitcher in baseball history, the Cy Young Award is voted upon by the Baseball Writers' Association of America prior to the beginning of the postseason.
