According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly seven million Americans, age 65 and over, are living with Alzheimer’s disease. And countless more are concerned about developing the disease.

It's a troubling trend, and a researcher here in Michigan is leading the push to find out why it's occurring as cases of Alzheimer's Disease are skyrocketing among Black Americans.

Alzheimer’s disease is not only a big problem now, but experts with the Alzheimer’s Association say that without a cure, it will continue to stay this way for the long term. Alzheimer’s disease -- a degenerative brain disease that is a form of dementia and affects memory, thinking and behavior -- affects more than 5 million people, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia kill more seniors than breast and prostate cancer combined. Between 2000 and 2018, deaths from Alzheimer’s disease have increased 146%. Alzheimer's disease is a heart breaking, life changing ailment that impacts families around Michigan every year. Over five million Americans are living with Alzheimer's, and as many as 16 million will have it by 2050, according to the Alzheimer's Association.
