School districts face difficult decisions with COVID-19 cases on the rise in Michigan
DETROIT โ Even the best laid plans had to be scrapped this year due to the coronavirus pandemic -- that especially goes for in-person learning plans at school districts across Metro Detroit. With cases on the rise in Michigan, districts are facing some very difficult decisions. On Tuesday night, the Farmington school district decided to keep its secondary kids home with virtual learning until the end of January. Two thirds of Wayne County schools started the year with remote learning -- some are looking to get children back into the classroom at least part time. Weโre starting to see the numbers go back up, but weโre in pretty good shape,โ Wayne Resa Superintendent Randy Liepa said.
COVID-19 pandemic makes traditional โcount dayโ for schools more complex than usual
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is making the traditional โcount dayโ a much more complicated effort. Schools have an opportunity to find and count students over the next 10 days to four weeks, depending on the learning model. The Novi school district is doing hybrid learning. Dr. Steve Matthews, the superintendent of the Novi Community School District believes his district has lost some students. With senior attrition and some unaccounted students -- the number could be closer to 5,575 over its 4 week count period.
Novi High School cancels in-person learning, activities after 5 students test positive for coronavirus
NOVI, Mich. โ Students at Novi High School are learning virtually for the remainder of the week after several students tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19). School leaders said that five high school students have tested positive for the virus this week alone. Matthews said that the school shuttered its doors immediately following the news of the confirmed positive cases. โNovi High School teachers will be in contact with students to ensure that they understand what to do on Thursday and Friday,โ reads a statement from Matthews. To err on the side of caution, we need Novi High School students to be home Thursday and Friday.โNovi High School will follow the regular bell schedule, 7:15 a.m. to 1:59 p.m., on Thursday and Friday.

NOVI, Mich. โ All students at Novi High School will be taught virtually on Thursday and Friday (Sept. 17-18) after five students at the school tested positive for COVID-19, according to the district. โNovi High School teachers will be in contact with students to ensure that they understand what to do on Thursday and Friday,โ reads a statement from district Superintendent Dr. Steve Matthews. The district advises both โAโ day and โBโ day hybrid students should log in Thursday to Zooms/Schoology. Regular virtual students continue to be virtual learners.
