DETROIT โ With COVID-19 numbers on the rise and Halloween right around the corner, the Detroit Health Department is urging everyone to take caution the All Hallows' Eve. Weโve had to deal with a lot of changes this year and Halloween will be no different. Detroit mayor Mike Duggan is working to make sure thereโs still a whole lot of fun in the city. Unlike some areas of Metro Detroit, the Detroit Health Department and Duggan are not taking away Halloween. However, with cases on the rise, itโs crucial to keep Halloween safe this year.
Detroit police chief held briefing after fifth day of protests
DETROIT โ Detroit police chief James Craig held a news conference at 2 p.m. on Wednesday to provide an update on the cityโs response to recent protests against police brutality in the name of George Floyd. Chief Craig was joined by Deputy Chief Todd Bettison; Deputy Chief Elaine Bryant; Ray Winans, CEO of Keeping Them Alive and other members of the community. Protestors took to the streets of Downtown Detroit for a fifth consecutive day on Tuesday to protest police brutality and racial injustice. Tuesdayโs peaceful protest became chaotic in the evening during a standoff with police and protestors who defied the cityโs 8 p.m. curfew. DETROIT Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan held a press conference Tuesday with Police Chief James Craig and Health Officer Denise Fair to provide an update on the citys response to recent protests and the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The fourth night of protests in Detroit against police brutality in the name of George Floyd ended peacefully for the first time since demonstrations began Downtown on Friday. Officials say Mondays protest differed from previous protests as it was led by young people who were intent on remaining peaceful. Ive got nothing but love from white officers, black officers, everybody thanking me for kneeling to support George Floyd, Bettison said. The citys curfew will remain in effect as most violence and damage is committed at night, Duggan said.
Detroit police deputy chief gets emotional speaking about taking knee with protestors
DETROIT While speaking at a press conference Tuesday afternoon Detroit Deputy Police Chief Todd Bettison talked about the emotional toll the protests are having on him and fellow officers. He got emotional at the press conference as he talked about how and why he took a knee with protestors. Monday nights protests in Detroit over the death of Floyd is being hailed as the most peaceful. Only a total of 40 people were arrested as opposed to 110 who were arrested Sunday. Floyd died after an officer pressed his knee into the Minnesota mans neck for minutes, even after he stopped moving.

DETROIT Residents and local leaders in Detroit are stepping up to minimize violence at protests in the city. The protests are being held to decry police brutality following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. He said he did it for the city, and for George Floyd. So much of it has to do with the relationships built with people like Maurice Hardwick, known as Pastor Mo. Police are trusting Pastor Mo to help diffuse tense situations.

DETROIT The outrage over George Floyds killing in Minneapolis has spilled over into violence around the country, but in Detroit, authorities and community leaders are working together to keep protests peaceful. From Detroit City Hall to the neighborhoods, people are making sure violence and vandalism is contained during protests. That success has a lot to do with the relationships police build with community leaders such as Maurice Hardwick, better known as Pastor Mo.
