DETROIT – I-94 in Detroit will be closed this weekend while a bridge is demolished.

---> Update: I-94 in Detroit won’t close for bridge demolition this weekend: Here’s why

Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be removing the McClellan Avenue overpass above I-94 this weekend.

The work will require the closure of I-94 between I-75 and Gratiot Avenue (M-3) starting at 8 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2025. Both directions of I-95 are expected to be back open by 5 a.m. on Monday, March 31.

The McClellan Avenue overpass was originally built in 1957. It was closed in March 2024 due to poor structural conditions.

The overpass will not be replaced. MDOT said this is because of future upgrades to the I-94/M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) interchange.

Detour planned

Westbound I-94 through traffic will be detoured via southbound M-3 and northbound I-75 back to westbound I-94.

All eastbound I-94 traffic will be detoured via southbound I-75 and northbound M-3 back to eastbound I-94.

Ramp closures

All entrance ramps to westbound I-94 will be closed from Cadieux Road to M-3.

All entrance ramps to eastbound I-94 from West Grand Boulevard to Van Dyke Avenue (M-53) will also be closed.

All ramps will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
