Sunshine, rain, eclipse: What to expect over next few days in Metro Detroit

Wet, mild weather expected in Metro Detroit next week

After a sunny start to Sunday, rain showers will move in at night in Southeast Michigan. Sunday's highs will be in the lower 50s. (WDIV)

Rain is in the forecast, but conditions are looking favorable for viewing the solar eclipse in Southeast Michigan.

It will be mostly clear and cool as a low-pressure system limits cloud development in Southeast Michigan on Saturday night. Lows will be in the lower 30s degrees. Winds will be out of the northeast about 5 to 10 mph.

It will be sunny Sunday morning, but clouds will increase in the afternoon. Skies will become mostly cloudy in the evening as rain moves toward Metro Detroit. Highs will be in the lower 50s, which is seasonal. Winds will shift from the northeast to the east in the afternoon at 5 to 10 mph.

Sunday night, rain showers will move into Southeast Michigan from the west. Communities west of US-23 will likely see showers by 10 p.m. Most of Metro Detroit will have rain showers in the area by midnight. Temperatures will fall to the lower 40s.

Monday

Monday is the big day for people excited to observe the Solar Eclipse. The day will begin with mostly cloudy skies and a few lingering showers during the morning drive. As showers move toward the northeast, the Thumb will be the last area to see the rain ending by late morning. Decreasing clouds will allow for partly cloudy skies by early afternoon. After 2 p.m., skies will be mostly sunny. Expect highs in the mid 60s. Winds will be out of the southeast and south at 8 to 12 mph with gusts up to 20 mph. Mild overnight lows will be in the mid 40s.

Timing of solar eclipse in Southeast Michigan

The eclipse will begin just before 2 p.m. in Southeast Michigan and end about 4:27 p.m. The maximum coverage will be about 3:12 p.m. to 3:14 p.m. Be sure to take precautions when viewing, such as wearing certified solar eclipse glasses. The solar eclipse will be closer to totality, or have greater coverage, the farther south and east you are in Michigan.

Tuesday

Showers and a few thunderstorms will be possible Tuesday afternoon and evening as a cold front pushes toward the area. Highs will be in the mid to upper 60s. Lows will be in the mid to upper 40s.

Chances for rain showers will continue through Friday, but temperatures will be normal to above normal through the end of the week.
