St. Clair Shores couple counts their blessings after truck crashes into their living room

‘This was a Christmas miracle if you ask me’

ST CLAIR SHORE, Mich. – A Macomb County woman is lucky to be alive after a speeding truck drove into her living room.

It happened Friday, Dec. 20, at a condo complex on Harper Avenue, near Masonic Avenue.

A woman driving a red truck plowed into the living room, smashing through the wall, destroying holiday decorations and narrowly missing 53-year-old Christine Chilcutt by roughly 10 feet.

The drive has been arrested

Chilcutt and her partner of 20 years, Tom Clark, are counting their blessings.

“It really hasn’t sunken in yet,” Chilcutt said. “Just really in a state of shock at the moment.”

She had gotten up to adjust the curtains seconds before the truck crashed through.

“I heard a crash. I turned and there was a truck in my living room,” Chilcutt said.

The couple frantically searched for their cats -- Bella and Stephie -- who were later found hiding downstairs.

“As soon as she turned around and walked into the kitchen. That’s when the truck came into the house,” said Bill Emerick, with Broadco Property Restoration. “So this was a Christmas miracle if you ask me.”

The repairs are only just beginning.

“We noticed the damage we have the bricks falling off, we have the siding coming off, we noticed the face of the building is pretty much damaged,” Emerick said.

The building was deemed livable.

Emerick said while this happens more than one would think, he hopes that his team cleaning and removing can make things easier on the couple.

“We’re just trying to get everything prepared for them at least somewhat to enjoy the holidays the best that they can obviously before Christmas,” Emerick said.
