BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – Nine adorable dogs have made their way to Metro Detroit after being rescued from the devastating wildfires in California. As the pups arrived, they were met with love and lots of kisses.
For Marisa Ruby, one of the rescuers, and Lauren Wynns, founder of Birmingham Dog Rescue, the moment was overwhelming.
“Just to see their little faces. I started to cry. It feels really good to save a life,” Ruby said.

Ruby said the rescue mission took three weeks of planning and $7,000 in fundraising. It was made possible by the dedicated community, the team at Birmingham Dog Rescue, and the nine local volunteers who stepped up to foster the rescued pups.
Wynns said the need for rescue was dire, adding that the Los Angeles area saw an overwhelming number of pets surrendered due to families being displaced by the wildfires. The team at Birmingham Dog Rescue knew they had to act.
“We did not take any dogs that had a chance of being reunited with their families,” said Wynns.
Instead, they saved owner surrenders and dogs already in overcrowded shelters with no other options — many of them on the list to be euthanized.

One of the rescued pups, Luna, a shepherd-husky mix, was surrendered by her owners just one day after the Eaton Fires began.
Now, she is settling into her foster home, which has a backyard to run around in and plenty of belly rubs.
“All she wants to do is kiss and be loved, and she’s really docile and sweet,” said Ruby.
While the dogs are now safe, the rescue still needs help raising funds for medical bills and supplies.
But one thing is certain: these pups are already proving that home is not just a place — it’s a feeling.
“Every single one of them is so sweet, and we’re already getting wonderful reports from their foster families,” said Wynns.
