WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – At Michigan Sneaker Xchange, it’s all about the kicks, streetwear, and accessories. This style is not only seen on the streets but also on Main Street.
From humble beginnings to haute couture, the evolution of streetwear is evident at the event.
Jake Schreier, an organizer and owner of Shop MSXC, explained the rise in popular brands.
“So, this Eric Emanuel. It’s a very popular brand out of New York. He’s been designing for years, and in the last few years, he blew up because of these shorts,” he said.
The kicks are a major draw, with organizers reporting over 20,000 pairs of sneakers in one spot at the Oakland Expo Center.
Every style imaginable is available, whether it’s just hitting the shelves or finding the rarest pairs.
Jordan Collins from 606 Kicks showcased a sought-after pair.
“These are the Jordan 1 Zion Williamson. Some people call these the Voodoos,” he said.
The event features sneaker resellers, local brands, and influencers all under one roof. With more than 150 vendors, it’s a haven for sneaker collectors and fashion lovers.
Attendees can transition from buyer to seller, and sometimes, trading takes place. The one-day event is not just about who’s the dopest; it’s about pushing the culture forward.
Perhaps, the style could find its way into business casual attire. Maybe.
“I think slowly but surely. A lot of these brands are making things with more subtle logo hints for that reason. Supreme has a lot more low-key sweaters,” Schreier said. “A lot of these brands are flowing into that. I think it just kind of depends on the workplace at the end of the day.”
The next Michigan Sneaker Xchange is scheduled for July.
