DETROIT – Happy Thursday and Cinco de Mayo!
It will be a pretty good one here weather-wise today.
Today is not Mexican Independence Day. Rather, it is a day to celebrate the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Today’s sunrise was at 6:24 a.m.
We should enjoy a little milky sunshine early on with increasing clouds through the late morning and afternoon. We will stay dry most of the day today.
We will see our highs in the low 60s in the early afternoon as clouds pour in, thicken and lower, blocking out all of our sunshine by 3 p.m. Temps will stay in the upper 50s to low 60s. Winds will move NE/SE at 5-12 mph.
We will see rain and thundershowers forming all day to our south and west, but we will keep them at bay until dinnertime or later here. We should be prepared for some showers later tonight, though, if you have plans for a fiesta or a Cinco de Mayo dinner.

Friday will be a tough one with mostly scattered rain showers moving in overnight. We should see a few hours of more widespread rain from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, and then a little midday break.
Highs may stay in the upper 50s all afternoon, but we have a shot at the low 60s if we get a few dry hours in the early afternoon.
More rain and thundershowers will move through here by the mid or late afternoon and into the evening hours. This will make for a tricky Friday afternoon commute. And, unfortunately, the rain with isolated rumbles of thunder will linger into the start of our weekend.
Right now, we are not in any risk for severe weather Friday or early Saturday, and we will certainly let you know if that changes -- but don’t count on it.
Mother’s Day weekend forecast
After morning showers and drizzle Saturday, skies will try to break up by mid or late afternoon, bringing partly sunny skies into play. Highs will settle in the upper 50s to low 60s. A pesky breeze will blow off of the big lakes, and that will hurt our highs and our shot at abundant sunshine.
Sunday is Mother’s Day, and it looks fabulous!
We will see a good deal of sunshine with temps between 65-70 degrees all afternoon, allowing you to do some planting or yard work for mom.
Monday will be well into the 70s, and Tuesday may be our first 80-degree day in a while. Most of next week looks very warm and on the dry side.
