Lake-effect snow, frigid temperatures to hit Metro Detroit -- what to know

Coolest air of the season so far arrives Thursday

DETROIT – A relatively dry start to your morning with a few flakes flying as we anticipate blustery, deteriorating conditions by this evening through Thursday morning.

Lake effect snow potential increases today and peaks tonight across Southeast Michigan. The worst of the snow will playout like last week, west of Lansing. However, snow bands will reach our area late this afternoon and evening, peaking in coverage and intensity tonight during the evening. Greater coverage toward the M-59/I-96/I-696 corridor.

Snow squalls are possible with rapid accumulation and loss of visibility, so exercise caution on the roads as white conditions occur quickly.

Highly variable accumulation of 1-3” with localized higher snowfall totals are possible. Wind gusts rise into the 30-40 mph range tonight into early tomorrow. This will create blowing and drifting snow.

Sunset is at 5:01 p.m.

Arctic air reinforced by blustery winds will lead to wind chills below zero around sunrise Thursday morning. Light snow showers or flurries continue through the day.

Thursday afternoon highs only in the 20s, but wind chills will only rise to single digits in the afternoon. If you work outside of your kids stand at the bus stop, these are dangerously cold temperatures if you don’t take the proper precautions. We do start to warm-up heading into the weekend with a chance for rain on Saturday.
