Wintry mix to bring snow accumulation to Metro Detroit -- here’s when and how much

Some parts of SE Michigan will see multiple inches of snow

An wintry mix and snow is expected to move into the region looking ahead into Monday (WDIV)

DETROIT – A wintry mix is coming to Metro Detroit and will likely bring accumulating snow and sleet to the area. Here’s the timeline and how much to expect.

Sunday weather forecast

Sunshine will continue into Sunday, but there will be a little more cloud cover than how we started the weekend.

High temperatures will be below freezing, in the mid-20s by Sunday afternoon.

Monday snowfall timing

Winter weather moves back into Southeast Michigan on Monday, as an area of low low pressure approaches.

We’re expecting a wintry mix, with most of the region starting off as snow.

When warmer air moves in Monday afternoon and evening, the snow will change over to a wintry mix in the areas along and south of M-59.

How much snow?

There’s a chance for areas along and north of M-59 to get a few inches of snow, or even more according to some data, depending on how the situation unfolds Monday.

South of M-59, after starting off with snow, it will change over to a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, as well as some rain showers as temperatures warm into the mid-30s.

These areas could get up to an inch of snow accumulation, as well as a light accumulation of sleet/freezing rain.

Christmas weather outlook

High temperatures warm into the mid-30s by Monday afternoon and stay below or near freezing along and north of M-59.

Dry weather arrives and sticks around for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Both days come with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures that warm into the upper 30s.

Post-holiday forecast

Cloud cover sticks around for Thursday before rain showers return into the end of the week on Friday.

The warming trend continues into the end of next week, with temperatures expected to warm into the lower 40s on both Thursday and Friday.

Rain chances last into the weekend. High temperatures continue to get warmer, heading into the upper 40s by the time we get to Saturday.
