4Warn Weather – After a few mild days across the region for the last full weekend of 2024, we are looking at some colder changes working into the start of the new year, and then all eyes are on the forecast through the end of the week and into the first half of January as there are some signs that we can see wintry weather return to the forecast.
You’ve probably seen a lot about this around social media, the last few days about an arctic outbreak, and winter storms moving through the Ohio Valley, Midwest and into the Northeastern United States for the first part of the New Year.
Here’s what you need to know as of Monday, December 30, 2024 :
As we go into the first weekend of the new year, we are looking at a pattern shift in the upper levels of the atmosphere, that would favor a colder than average solution, moving into a good portion of the United States.
The NOAA Climate Prediction Center’s is 6 to 10 Day Temperature Outlook does have the chance of well below average temperature is moving into the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and northeastern United States, including Metro Detroit.
The Climate Prediction Center has also placed the area in a slight risk of heavy snow January 4 through January 7, as well as a slight risk of hazardous temperatures being below average, January 5 through January 10.
So what does this all mean for the forecast for Metro Detroit and Southeastern Michigan?
As far as the snow is concerned, this outlook does not guarantee that snow will happen, but there are some signs to at least one or more systems moving through the region during this timeframe. If this would materialize, we would have to watch them very closely.
As far as the cold temperatures are concerned, I think there is a better potential for this to happen, as some of the signs are showing to one or more arctic outbreaks moving in during this timeframe as well. Some early indications are moving into Monday, January 6, we would see wind chill values early that morning into the single digits over most of the region.
Keep in mind, that this forecast is beyond our Future4Cast, and we will continue to keep a close eye on this as we go through the rest of the week and end of the first part of 2025.
