DETROIT – Snow is returning to Metro Detroit on Thursday, with the amount and timing becoming more clear.

How much snow?

This isn’t expected to be a major snowfall like the one from last weekend, which brought multiple inches of accumulation to the area.

On Thursday, most of Southeast Michigan will likely get about a half-inch of snow.

There will be some spots that get more -- perhaps up to an inch.

Snowfall timeline

It appears the snow will start to fall around 5-6 a.m. Thursday, so it will affect the morning commute.

Drivers should leave extra time in the morning and be careful, because roads might be slick.

The snow should wrap up by about noon.

Next chance of winter weather

A much more significant round of precipitation is expected to arrive in Metro Detroit this weekend.

A mix of rain and snow is approaching on Saturday, and it could create some nasty conditions for drivers.

We’ll have more specific details on that storm in the coming days.

Dangerously cold temperatures

Wind chill temperatures could drop as low as 20-30 degrees below zero Monday night into Tuesday morning next week.

Dangerous temperatures will begin Sunday night into Monday morning -- the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. There’s a chance the temperatures could cause school closings for Tuesday after the three-day weekend.
