Widespread rain, snow mix expected this weekend in Metro Detroit -- what to know

Cold front brings rain/snow mix this weekend ahead of dangerous cold next week

DETROIT – We haven’t started the morning with these type of temperatures since the first few days of January. We are waking up to temperatures about 10 degrees warmer than yesterday. With sunshine working in and above average temperatures forecasted this afternoon, this could possibly be the pick day of the rest of the month.

Saturday

Widespread rain/snow to snow is expected Saturday morning. Snow accumulation totals of a half-inch up to 2 inches likely, with higher-end amounts possible if the changeover occurs sooner. Rain definitely makes this a tricky forecast. We will hit our high temperatures early (mid-30s) and then slide throughout the day in the wake of the passing cold front. Therefore, plan for drier but colder conditions for tailgating outside of Ford Field.

Sunday

Cloudy and cold. Highs will only be in teens and lows will fall below zero Sunday night.

Next week

Dangerous cold moves in Monday through Wednesday; the coldest air of the season so far. Morning lows will drop below zero degrees with wind chills falling 15 to 25 degrees below zero each morning. We have issued 4Warn Weather Alerts for early next week due to the extreme cold. High temperatures will only in the single digits Monday and Tuesday and wind chill reading will not rise above zero. Stay with Local 4 as these temperatures could lead to potential school closings early next week.
