DETROIT – Metro Detroit is going to be hit by two significant rounds of snow over the next four days -- one Wednesday into Thursday and a two-day storm over the weekend.

Wednesday-Thursday snow

All of Southeast Michigan is under either a winter storm warning or a winter weather advisory from 1 p.m. Wednesday through 7 a.m. Thursday.

  • The winter storm warning is for Macomb, Lapeer, St. Clair, and Sanilac counties.
  • The winter weather advisory is for Wayne, Oakland, Washtenaw, Monroe, Livingston, Lenawee, and Genesee counties.
  • A 4Warn Weather Alert is also in place through Thursday morning due to the widespread and, at times, heavy snowfall.

Snow showers are starting to move in Wednesday afternoon, but they won’t pick up in intensity until the evening.

Heavy snow will continue overnight before tapering down before daybreak, likely around 4 a.m. Thursday.

The entire area could get between 2 and 8 inches of snow, with higher totals closer to the Thumb. Most of Metro Detroit will likely end up in the range of 3-6 inches.

Precipitation near the Ohio border could turn to a wintry mix around midnight, which would leave a glaze of ice.

2-day weekend snowstorm

Another round of snow is heading toward Southeast Michigan this weekend, and while it’s too early to give specifics, this appears to be an impactful winter storm.

While it’s possible this second storm will bring a similar amount of snow as the first, it will be spread out over the course of two days, making the accumulation less concentrated.

As of now, it appears snow showers will move in overnight Friday into Saturday and continue into Saturday afternoon.

When it gets closer to midnight Saturday into Sunday, there might be a wintry mix, especially in the southern parts of the area.

Precipitation will be back to snow on Sunday, and the heaviest snowfall of this storm will be on Sunday morning. The bulk of the snow from this storm is through Sunday.

Early next week

Much colder air is moving in for early next week.

Highs will be in the teens during the first half of the workweek, with morning lows in the single digits.
