Accumulating snow, wintry mix expected for Metro Detroit through end of weekend

Bitter cold temperatures with sub-zero wind chills move in for early next week

Snow will continue through the weekend with some places potentially seeing significant snow accumulations (WDIV)

4Warn Weather – Most of the region is waking up Saturday morning to a light coating of snow as our Winter Weather Advisory kicked in overnight and will remain an effect until 7 p.m. Saturday evening.

Expect snow showers to continue throughout the day, but as temperatures warm up just a few degrees above that freezing mark, we will see a transition to a wintry mix possible along and south of I-96. To go with that snow accumulation, we will look for a light coating of ice, thanks to some freezing rain with that wintry mix into this afternoon as well.

As we go into the late evening and overnight hours tonight, temperatures will go back below the freezing mark, and we will see a transition back over to snow.

Sunday

We will watch an area of low pressure, strengthen and move into the Ohio Valley through the end of the weekend on Sunday, and that will give us a chance of accumulating snow through the end of the weekend on Sunday, some of that could potentially be significant, especially along and north of I-96.

The snow will wind down Sunday evening, and we will keep a few flakes into the forecast late Sunday night into early on Monday morning. The winds will also become increasingly gusty throughout the end of the weekend on Sunday, expect gusts of 30 to 35 miles an hour Sunday afternoon and into Sunday evening is that low pressure center pulls east of the region.

Then, we look ahead into early next week, and while we keep cloud covering into the forecast on Monday and Tuesday, we have another arctic blast working into the region looking ahead into early next week. High temperatures will only make it into the teens early next week, but once you factor in the winds, we are expecting wind chill values to drop well below zero Monday night and Tuesday night. There are also some indications that wind chills will remain below zero throughout the day on Monday.

Winter Weather Advisory

All of Southeastern Michigan until 7 p.m. Saturday night. Up to 2-3 inches of snow accumulation is possible along with a glazing of ice from freezing rain as we see a wintry mix for some of us with temperatures just above the freezing mark Saturday afternoon.
