Metro Detroit is seeing a snowy weekend come to a close, but arctic air will become the next inconvenience.
Some places in Southeast Michigan picked up at least a half-foot of snow over the weekend, including communities in northern Oakland and Macomb counties and parts of the Thumb.
Although the weather systems that brought most of the accumulating snow have exited the region, lake-effect snow showers will continue into Sunday night. An additional light coating of snow is possible.
In addition to the lake-effect snow, the gusty winds are causing blowing snow. This combination could reduce visibility and lead to slick roads.
Flurries will still be possible as clouds decrease Sunday night. Temperatures will be in the single digits in the Thumb; around 10 degrees in Flint, Howell and Pontiac; and the lower teens in Warren, Livonia, Detroit and Dearborn. Winds will be out of the west-northwest at 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. The breezy conditions will make it feel colder. The wind chills will be in the single digits.
Presidents’ Day (Washington’s Birthday)
By Monday morning, with temperatures in the teens, the wind chills will be five below to 0 degrees. Sky conditions will range from partly cloudy to mostly cloudy. A few flurries will be possible through the afternoon. High temperatures will range from 15 degrees near Lapeer to 20 degrees in Downtown Detroit. Westerly winds will be 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Afternoon wind chills will be below zero in most locations.
Cloudy skies will become partly cloudy on Monday night. Temperatures will fall to near freezing as wind chills plummet to -15 to -5 degrees.
Tuesday
Tuesday will be partly cloudy, but it will be frigid. Highs will be in the teens and lows around zero.
Wednesday
Wednesday’s temperatures will struggle to reach 20 degrees. Most communities will see daytime temperatures peak in the teens. There will be a chance of snow showers at night. Lows will be around 10 degrees.
Thursday
A few light snow showers will be possible Thursday morning. Otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy as temperatures climb to around 20 degrees.
Friday and Saturday
Skies will be partly cloudy to mostly cloudy on Friday and Saturday. Highs will return to the mid 20 on both days. Lows will be 10 to 15 degrees.
Sunday
As a warmer air mass pushes over the Great Lakes region on Sunday, temperatures will rise to around 30 degrees. That remains below the average high of 37 degrees. The normal low for the end of next week is 22 degrees.
