Warm, windy weekend with strong storms possible in Metro Detroit

Pi Day, the day to celebrate the mathematical constant, is pushing the thermometer to numbers that are well above normal in Metro Detroit.

Clouds will increase Friday night as rain showers and thunderstorms approach from the west. The showers and thunderstorms will arrive mainly after 5 a.m. It will be breezy as temperatures fall to the lower to mid 50s. Winds will be out of the south-southwest at 10 to 20 mph.

Saturday

The rain is expected to exit Southeast Michigan by late Saturday morning. With a mix of sunshine and clouds, temperatures will push into the lower 70s. The average high for March 15 is 45 degrees, and the record high is 77 degrees. Non-thunderstorm winds will be out of the south at 15 to 25 mph with gusts in excess of 40 mph.

The chance of showers and thunderstorms returns Saturday night. The rain will move toward Southeast Michigan at night, with the best chance after midnight. There is a chance that a few storms could become strong to severe. An isolated storm could produce damaging winds. A tornado cannot be ruled out of possibilities.

Lows will be in the mid 40s. Southerly winds will be 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

Sunday

The chance of showers will stick around for Sunday morning and early afternoon. Otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy. Cooler air behind the stormy weather will keep highs in the lower to mid 50s. Sunday night’s temperatures will fall back to freezing, with lows around 30 degrees.

Monday

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations will be met with pleasant weather. Under mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies, temperatures will peak around 50 degrees. Lows will be in the mid to upper 30s.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Highs will increase to the lower 60s for Tuesday and Wednesday. While Tuesday will be partly cloudy, it will be cloudier on Wednesday.

The rain will move into Southeast Michigan on Wednesday night, with lows in the mid to upper 30s.

Thursday and Friday

Rain and snow showers will be possible on Thursday, which is the first day of spring. Highs will range from the mid 40s to around 50 degrees. Friday will be dry with highs in the mid 40s, which is near normal.
