Metro Detroit has the ingredients for the formation of intense thunderstorms this weekend.

Scattered rain showers will continue into Saturday night, with temperatures in the lower to mid 50s in most of Metro Detroit. Lows will fall into the 40s in Flint, Lapeer, Armada, and Port Huron.

Sunday

A 4Warn Weather Alert has been declared for Sunday afternoon and evening due to the risk of severe thunderstorms.

All of Metro Detroit and the majority of Southeast Michigan is under a slight (level 2 of 5) risk of severe thunderstorms. The risk will be lower, north of M-46, in the Thumb. There will be an enhanced (level 3 of 5) risk near the state line.

Threats from the strongest storms would include the chance of damaging winds, hail, and street flooding. There is a low possibility of an isolated tornado. The strongest storms are likely to form sometime between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m. Sunday.

An “enhanced” risk of severe weather will stretch through the Ohio and Tennessee valleys and Mid-South, including Indianapolis, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Nashville, and Memphis.

Moisture from the Gulf and afternoon temperatures in the 60s to near 70 degrees will fuel thunderstorms, which develop ahead of and along a cold front that will move eastward across Michigan.

The threatening weather is expected to exit Southeast Michigan before midnight. A few showers may linger later into the overnight hours as temperatures begin their descent.

Monday

Monday’s warmest temperatures will occur during the early morning hours. Morning temperatures will be around 50 degrees, but temperatures will tumble lower into the 40s in the afternoon and 30s during the evening. A few wet snowflakes may mix with isolated rain showers. Nighttime temperatures will fall into the mid to upper 20s.

Tuesday

Tuesday will be dry with the appearance of sunshine. Highs will be in the lower to mid 40s, and lows will be in the lower 30s.

Wednesday

More wet and stormy weather will aim for Metro Detroit on Wednesday. The ingredients for strong storms will once again be present.

Safety Reminders

While it is the hope that you will not need to rely on your weather emergency safety plan on Sunday, you should review the plan with your family and friends. Know when and where to shelter whether at home or away from home.

A watch means that conditions are favorable, and a warning means that the weather event is imminent and requires immediate action.

Remember to treat “severe thunderstorm warnings” with the same urgency that a “tornado warning” would elicit.
