Let it snow! Here’s when snow arrives in Metro Detroit and how much we will see

4Warn Weather Alert issued for Friday morning

Two rounds of snow are heading for Metro Detroit this week. (WDIV)

It’s a cloudy and cooler start to your morning with temperatures around freezing and wind chills feeling even cooler due to a light northerly breeze.

Sunrise is at 7:58 a.m.

Our next weather maker is on the horizon. Low pressure brings light accumulating snow late this afternoon and evening.

The window for the first wave is mainly 4-10pm, persisting a bit later into the Thumb. By midnight, most will have minor accumulations around half an inch. The snow begins to stack up overnight into Friday morning.

Sunset is at 5:04 p.m.

After midnight through the morning commute, we will see a total of 1 to 3 inches of snow accumulation. Snow covered roads are likely to impact the Friday morning commute, so a 4Warn Weather Alert has been issued for Friday morning.

With model data picking up scattered snow bands persisting into Friday afternoon and evening, we could see locally higher totals by Friday night in excess of 3-4 inches where those lake effect bands set up.

Otherwise, much colder air moves in for the weekend limiting daytime highs to the 20s with single digit wind chills possible at night. We will start a warming trend heading into Christmas.

We will have to see if the Friday snow sticks around with highs possibly reaching the upper 30s on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. It is worth mentioning that long range data is suggesting another quick system that could give us a few more snow showers later Monday, but as temperatures rise, we could see a few cold raindrops mix in. Will our snow depth melt away Christmas Eve? That is the question!
