Wintry weather takes aim at Metro Detroit amid holiday travel

Seasonable weather forecast for Christmas in Southeast Michigan

A mixed bag of precipitation, including snow, rain, and sleet, will inconvenience travelers and last-minute shoppers in Southeast Michigan before Christmas.

Sunday night will be mostly cloudy with lows around 20 degrees. Southerly winds will be 5 to 10 mph.

A low-pressure system will slide across the Great Lakes on Monday with chances of mixed precipitation. In the morning, it will be cloudy with a chance of flurries before sunrise. Then, the precipitation will arrive from the northwest and pick up in the late morning and early afternoon.

Precipitation will be primarily snow north of I-69, where two to four inches of accumulation will be possible by night Between I-69 and I-94, expect rain and snow with a chance of sleet. South of I-94, there will be some mix and rain with little to no snow accumulation.

Accumulations will be in the half-inch to two-inch range in most of Metro Detroit. The weather will impact the afternoon and evening drive.

Besides Monday’s wet weather, temperatures will return to normal with highs in the mid 30s. Winds will be out of the south at 8 to 12 mph with gusts up to 20 mph.

While most of the activity will move out by 9 p.m., a few rain and snow showers will linger later into the night. Otherwise, it will be cloudy. Lows will be in the lower to mid 30s.

Tuesday

Tuesday, or Christmas Eve, will be calm and mostly cloudy in Metro Detroit. The rain and snow will impact New England. Highs will be in the mid 30s in Metro Detroit, which is near average. Lows will be 25 to 30 degrees.

Christmas

Wednesday, Christmas Day and the start of Hanukkah, will be a carbon copy. Expect it to be cloudy and dry. Highs will be in the mid 30s. Lows will be in the lower 30s.

Thursday

Thursday’s weather will be a carbon copy. Boxing Day and the start of Kwanzaa will be mostly cloudy and seasonable. Highs will be around 40 degrees. Lows will be in the upper 20s and lower 30s.

Friday through the Weekend

Under cloudy skies and a chance of rain showers, temperatures will rise into mid 40s on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, it will be cloudy with rain shower chances again. Highs will be in the upper 40s to 50 degrees.
